Young Logan Bediamol represents surfing’s new guard on Maui’s North Shore. From an early age he’s shown skill and determination well beyond his years. In this depiction of Logan, his oversized big wave surfboard is an indication of where he has his sights set. A surfing career which is yet to unfold but full of promise.

In the Eighties I took my first trip to Fiji on the word from some friends that there was a little island surrounded by great surf with no one around. The only thing was that this little island was uninhabited and that a boat was needed to get to it from wherever you were staying. We ended up staying on island nearby and everyday we passed by this point on the way to surf.

I have a fascination with palm trees that borders on obsession. My photo collection of palm trees from around the world is numbered in the thousands. Palm trees are the lifeblood for many tropical communities. Every part of the tree contributes to sustaining life whether it’s nourishment, shelter, utility, or clothing, the palm plant delivers. But beyond all of its uses the palm tree is the quintessential icon of the island nations. And Hawaii has some of the finest.

I’ve always been interested in the early photographs of Hawaii. Especially the portraits taken in the studios of Honolulu at the turn of the century. Many of the photos were taken against a painted backdrop of a scene that was meant to depict the Hawaiian Islands in a classic sense. Despite the sometimes awkward setting, the pride of the Hawaiian people was unmistakable.

It’s not hard to look at this image and think that this time was one of surfing’s Golden Periods. Every wave had multiple surfers, all having a great time.

This was a special project for me. I was invited to participate in the 20th annual Legends of Surfing event to raise funds for the Moore’s Cancer Center research. I was asked to create the imagery for the promotional material as well as put something into the auction. I created a piece called Surfvive that reminds us how lucky we are to live this surfing life.

On a surf trip to Peru I stayed with the Siskar family. They had this little left point break in front of their house that was a short paddle away. I sat and watched Gary and Johanna catch wave after wave, pulling off moves like this all morning.
